Dug a toilet pit in Pete and Sharon’s garden when we got back. I felt bad about it, but they’re not going to live to see the mess I’ve made, and I couldn’t face the damage I’d do to either my lawn or the plants. I know it’s facile – that first rain will already have irrevocably poisoned the soil for generations, it’s all going to rot and die soon enough – but looking over it in the afternoon sunlight, the colours, the leaves, all that growth… I teared up at the thought. Seems like every other fucking thought today made me cry, or want to.

Inventory: ninety-six litres of drinking water (plus four cisterns, here and next door, if things get desperate), chocolate bars, crisps and cans of Coke to add to the food stash. Pete’s bulk buying habits also extended to toilet roll, which is handy. I feel like, in the absence of disaster, we’re pretty well set to see things out.

Second laptop battery is down to 80%. If I keep writing to this level of detail, it seems likely that this journal will cease long before we do. Maybe that’s for the best, too. It’s apt to get ugly towards the end. This way, you can remember us at our best.
